【木曜鍵盤曲】Honeydripper / Mac Rebennack('81)
昨日間違えて「Gumbo」の方を挙げてしまいましたが、ホントは木曜は鍵盤でした。で2日連続ですがドクター・ジョン。コロコロまわるpianoはセカンドラインと呼ばれるニュー・オーリンズ産R&Bでおなじみのもの。この”Honeudripper”は、84年に出たロンドンでのライヴ(素晴らしいけど未CD化かもしれない）の1曲目で、こういうライヴが聞きたいと80'sの野音でのニュー・オーリンズ・フェスやLive Innでのドクター・ジョンの単独ライヴに出かけたのでした。元々は「Dr.Plays Mac Rebennack」というpianoの弾き語りの(インストだったかな)アルバムに入ったものでした。

■Flight Of The Dove / The SHF Band('74)
JDサウザー、クリス・ヒルマン、リッチー・フューレイの力量が拮抗していたSHFバンドの1枚目には、いくらレコード会社のボスによって寄せ集められたバンドにせよ、適度な緊張感が漂っています。”Flight Of The Dove”ではフューレイのポップな音楽性が炸裂した名曲。いい曲を作ってもヒットに結び付かなかったことを悲観してポコを辞めたフューレイにとってこのアルバムからの”Fallin’ In Love”がヒットしたことは溜飲が下がったことでしょう。ただそのテンションは2枚目まで持続しませんでしたが。

実は結構なキヤリアな連中が集まったポリスのデビュー当時はホワイト・レゲエと言われたもんです。どんどん音楽的に進化していって僕なんか3枚目までしかついてゆけなくなってしまいましたが、ファーストのこういう曲を聞くとホッとします。ラストに入った”Masoko Tanga”です。

■Turtle Dove / The Rats('74)
ラッツはGoodearからデビューしたパワーポップ風味のバンドで、74年にはちょっと早かったなあ。時代柄グラム的な扱いを受けたかもしれませんがあと1年遅ければパブロックとしてパンク世代への架け橋になったかも。この”Turtle Dove”はドライヴするロックンロールで小気味よいです。voのデイヴィッド・キュービネックは、A&Mからソロを出してNew Waveの時代にちょっと話題になったことがありました。

■White White Dove / Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel('76)
新メンバーになって2枚目になる「Timeless Flight」('76)からのコックニー・レベル。ダンカン・マッケイのkb類の使い方からプログレ的に取られる部分も。新世代のグラムだったデビュー当時よりもカリスマvoがいる10CC的なイメージあります。ファンキーな音作りも随所に。

■Dirty White Boy / Foreigner('79)
「Double Vision」から1年後のサードではbassがリック・ウィリスに交代。徐々にシンセ類が大げさになり産業ロックと呼ばれるのも無理ない感じです。基本線は、ハードロックでこの”Dirty White Boy”のようにシンプルな畳みかけるような音ですが。このPV、ルー・グラムはあってますが、あとのメンバーにアクションが演奏とずれてます。こんなんでも公式なの？

■Great White Hope / Styx('79)
スティックスの「Pieces Of Eight」の1曲目です。ジェームズ・ヤング主導のハードロックです。スティックスはプログレ・ハードとか呼ばれましたが、プログレっぽい装飾(途中のシンセソロなど）を好むハードロックが本質でしょう。少なくともこの頃は。この”Great White Hope”は同名の映画(邦題は「ボクサー」）があるので、当然ボクシングの話。当然英国のプログレからの影響もあるので、ヒプノシスにジャケットを頼んで～というのも気持ちわかりますわ。

コステロは「Girls Girls Girls」というベスト盤を愛聴してましたんで、どのアルバムに入ってたかということがピンとこない。てっきりもっと初期の「Trust」あたりの曲かと思ってた”I Hope You're Happy Now"が実は「Blood &Chocolate」の曲だと知ってびっくりでした。リアルで日本盤がメジャーから出ずPヴァインから出たのは閉鎖されたF BeatレーベルじゃなくDemonレーベル傘下のImpからだったから。
