【火曜はハード&ヘヴィ(新)】ヴァン・ヘイレン
レココレ8月号が70'sハード&ヘヴィのアルバムランキングなんで久々に買ってみました。事前に予想したトップ5は、プレゼンス、マシンヘッド、ロックス、レッド、サバスのなんか(よく知らんので）あたりだったのですが、意外にも1位はヴァン・ヘイレンのファースト、「プレゼンス」が16位(ゼッペリンは4枚目が2位）、「ロックス」に至っては26位とずいぶん低い。各人のハード&ヘヴィ感は様々ながら、曲単位でなくアルバム単位での投票、そして若い選者も増えてるのか、ゼッペリンよりもパープル人気が増し、サバス人気が上がってるのが面白い、とこの辺を肴にしばらくまたやってみます。まずヴァン・ヘイレン。ファーストはとにかく音がいいアルバムだったなあ、という印象でした。リリースは78年で派手なgもありましたが陽気なアメハー。高校時代の同級生たちは初来日行ってましたね、そういえば(新人お試し価格で安かった）。このファーストといえば僕はこの1曲目”Running With The Devil”になります。DL・ロスの困り顔とか透明感あふれるコーラスも印象的でした。
レココレのランキングで、どうしてもハード&ヘヴィとは言えないウィッシュボーン・アシュ（「Argus」）やフリー（「Fire&Water」「Heartbreaker」）やバドカン(ファースト)が入ってて悩ましい。この辺は私見ですがブリティッシュ・ロックで、曲単位ならともかくアルバム単位ではハードロックとはなかなか言いにくいです。ただ大昔「ヤング・ジョッキー」できいた”Worrior”はハードな曲だ！とおもったものでした。
ハンブル・パイの「Smokin’」がレココレのランキングで14位。この辺も迷うところですが、少なくともこのアルバムならアリです。Immediateが倒産して移籍した米A&Mがゼッペリンを見て、これからは大音量のハードロックの時代が来ると予測したのは正しいです。フランプトンが抜けフォーキーな作風が後退したこともハードロック化へ追い風となりました。ただスティーヴ・マリオットのゴスペル・ロック路線が色濃くなり過ぎた後半はハードロックとはいいがたいですけど。

■Pink's Song / Richard Wright('78)
「Animals」を出した後フロイドのメンバーは順にソロに入りますが、ギルモアに続いてkb奏者のリック・ライトが出した「Wet Dream」は、あまりうまくないvoと耽美なメロディーが印象的でした。ゴンザレスのラリー・スティール(b)、ロビン・トロワーのレグ・イシドア(ds)、フロイドのツアーメンバーのスノウィー・ホワイト(g)らが参加しています。フロイドの事を歌ったの？と思ってしまう"Pink's Song"ではメル・コリンズがfluteで参加。

■A Song For Jenny / Humble Pie('71)
「Rock On」に入ったカントリーロック風味（BJ・コールがsteel）のナンバーではありますが、ゴスペルっぽさもあってソウルフルな味わい。”ジェニーにささげし歌”という古式ゆかしい邦題がついてた気がします。この頃のハンブル・パイはまだアコースティックなフォーク・ロックも得意としていてそれはフランプトン効果だったわけです。

■War Song / Neil Young & Graham Nash('72)
このシングル”戦いの歌”は、90'sあたりではここでしか聞けなく激レアなものでした（WB/Repriseのサンプラーをこの曲目当てに買った）がアーカイヴ・シリーズが充実した今はどうなんでしょう？ちょうど「Harvest」後でバックはストレイ・ゲイターズ。ベン・キースのまろやかなsteelが気持ちいい。政治的な題材(確か大統領選がらみ）なのでヒットはしていません(#61止まり)。

■Between The War / Billy Bragg（’85）
初期のビリー・ブラッグというとel-gの弾き方でアンプを背負って、個人の視点で民衆のために歌う、という感じで「ひとりクラッシュ」とも評されていました。80'sのサッチャー政権への不満やフォークランド紛争（ここでのwarは多分それでしょう）への反対意志をさりげない言葉で歌っております。家族のために戦争に行ったのに、武器で儲けやがったやつがいる、とかそれほど声高に怒りをぶつけるわけでなく悲しみをたたえた歌なのがいいです。

■Make Love Not War / Peter Skellern（’75）
sswのピーター・スケラーンはDeccaに多くを残したピアノマンですが、唯一Islandに残した「Hard Times」にはジョージ・フォード(b～コックニー・レベル）やロブ・タウンゼンド(ds～ファミリー）が参加しています。ミュージカル的なMOR的なムードはどっちかと言うと苦手ですが、このアルバムに限っては割と聞きやすいポップ色があります。ジョージ・ハリスンのスライドgの入った"Make Love Not War"は人気曲であります。エンディングで"クワイ河マーチ"が引用されます。
